Hailed by Opera magazine for her performances of Amneris as “most impressive” and “with a rich mezzo timbre,” Israeli mezzo-soprano Edna Prochnik’s 2019/20 season highlights include Erda in Siegfried at Staatstheater Kassel, Filippyevna in Eugene Onegin with Israeli Opera, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Last season, she sang Erda in Das Rheingold and Siegfried with Staatstheater Kassel, and Herodias in Salome with both Israeli Opera and Spoleto Festival USA. She also sang performances of Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder with Maestro Dan Ettinger and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and Chausson’s Poème de l’amour et de la mer with the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker. Recent performances include Olga in Die lustige Witwe with Opéra National de Paris, Klytämnestra in Elektra with Staatstheater Braunschweig, Kundry in excerpts of Parsifal in concert with the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, Die gute Hexe in Maxwell Davis’ The Hogboon with Grand Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg, and Kurt Weill’s Die Verheissung with MDR Sinfonieorchester in Leipzig. She also sang Panisello’s Le malentendu at the Neue Oper Wien and Teatros de Canal in Madrid, Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 at the Basilika Trier, and Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro in a return to the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, also with Dan Ettinger conducting.
A frequent presence at the New Israeli Opera, her previous performances with the company have included Cornelia in Giulio Cesare, Amneris in Aida, Ottavia in L’incoronazione di Poppea, Varvara in Kátya Kabanová, Auntie in Peter Grimes, and the First Wife in the world premiere of Baradanshvilli’s Journey to the End of the Millenium as well as in subsequent performances both in Israel and on tour to the Opera di Roma, the Cook in Rusalka, as well as oratorio works that included Handel’s Messiah and Mendelssohn’s Elijah. She made her American debut as Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana with Palm Beach Opera and has sung Prince Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus both at the Wiener Kammeroper and on tour with the company in Japan. Ms. Prochnik’s other performances of Prince Orlovsky include the Salzburger Landestheater, where she also sang the Dritte Dame in Die Zauberflöte. She has also sung Fenena in Nabucco with the Bergen Opera Festival and further performances of Amneris in Aida with St. Margarethen’s Summer Opera Festival.
On the concert stage, Ms. Prochnik recently sang Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Kurt Masur. She has often joined the Symphony Orchestra Rishoi le Zion for works that include Baeethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Dan Ettinger conducting, Mahler’s Das Knaben Wunderhorn, Bach’s Mass in B minor with John Nelson conducting, Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, and de Falla’s El Amor Brujo. She has also sung Bernstein’s Jeremiah Symphony with the Haifa Symphony Orchestra, Verdi’s Requiem at the Prague Summer Festival, Elgar’s Sea Pictures with the Herzeliyah Symphony, concert performances of Cavalleria Rusticana with the Nijemegen Symfonieorkest in the Netherlands, works by composer Oded Zahavi with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and gala concerts with both the Philharmonic Orchestra of Suedwestfalen in Antwerp and the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. She sang the world premiere of Vázquez’s Requiem at the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico.
Ms. Prochnik has worked with other noted conductors such as Philippe Entremont, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Marek Janovski, Frederic Chaslin, Gari Bertini, Yuri Falk, Noam Sheriff, Martin Haselboeck, Heinz Hennig, Peter Bergamin, Jiri Kout, Mendi Rodan, and Avi Ostrovski.
She holds and Artist Diploma from the Hochschule für Sarstellende Kunst and graduated with honors from Tel Aviv’s Rubin Academy of Music.
