Catalan baritone Lluís Calvet i Pey is a finalist and winner of numerous prizes in the 2024 Concurso de Canto Tenor Viñas, including the Placido Domingo Prize, the Zarzuela Prize, and the Audience Prize. In the 2024-25 season he joins the Staatsoper Hannover Ensemble where his roles will include his role debuts as Silvio in Pagliacci, Mr. Kallenbach in Satyagraha, Schaunard in La bohème, several roles in Maria de Buenos Aires, along with reprise performances of the Huntsman in Rusalka. Last season, as a member of the International Opera Studio of the Staatsoper Hannover, his roles included William in The Fall of the House of Usher, Fiorello in Il Barbiere di Siviglia (while also being responsible for Figaro), Belcore in L’elisir d’amore, the Huntsman in Rusalka, M. Javelinot, Second Commissioner and Jailer in Dialogues des Carmélites, Sherifa in Zad Moultaka’s Hamed und Sherifa, Ruggiero in Halévy’s La Juive and Ping in Turning Turandot. He also made his Staatsoper Stuttgart debut as Chou En-lai in Nixon in China conducted by André de Ridder.
Other recent engagements include Small Prisoner/ Bitter Prisoner in From the House of the Dead at the Ruhrtriennale Summer Festival conducted by Dennis Russell Davies and Publio in a recording of L’esule di Roma with Opera Rara and the Britten Sinfonia conducted by Carlo Rizzi. He joined L’Academia Rossiniana di Pesaro as Lord Sidney in Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims, and as a member of the RWCMD, his roles included Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus and Count Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro.

He has attended music workshops at Royaumont Abbey & Foundation with Stéphane Degout, Alain Planès, Christian Immler, Andreas Frese and Claire Thirion, and has received numerous awards, most recently the Eva Kleinitz Scholarship from Opera Europa.
He began his studies at the Conservatori Professional de Sabadell, was awarded the Young Promises scholarship by the Fundació de Música Ferrer-Salat to study for a singing degree at the Conservatori Superior del Liceu. He then joined the MA Opera course at the Conservatori Superior del Liceu, where his performances included Belcore in L’elisir d’amore. Lluís finished his undergraduate studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama at the David Seligman Opera School, and later was awarded a scholarship to complete his MA in Advanced Opera at the RWCMD by Clive Richards Foundation and John & John Foundation.
