Following performances of Il Trovatore, the Washington Post praised Giovanni Meoni’s voice as “dark and bracing as good Italian coffee, with virile strength in all registers and the kind of big, expressive delivery that’s tailor-made for this opera.” In the 2017-18 season he sings the title role in Nabucco with Opéra National de Montpellier and Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, and Renato in Un ballo in maschera with Gran Teatre del Liceu and Opéra national de Lorraine. Last season, he returned to Teatro Massimo in Palermo for performances of Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, both Oper Graz and Teatro Pergolesi for Germont in La traviata, Verona’s Teatro Filarmonico for Scarpia in Tosca, and La Monnaie for Amonasro in Aida.
Among the baritone’s other recent engagements are returns to Opéra Royal de Wallonie for Count di Luna in Il trovatore and Rodrigo in Don Carlo, Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, his first performances of Iago in Otello with Riccardo Muti conducting with Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, the title role of Nabucco with Novaya Opera in Moscow, Germont in La traviata at Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège, and Don Carlo in Ernani with the Teatro Bellini in Catania. He also returned to both Rome’s Teatro dell’Opera for Amonasro in Aida and Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor for performances at Caracalla and the Arena di Verona for further performances of Aida, of Riccardo in I Puritani with Baltimore Opera, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor at the Zurich Opera and at the Concergebouw in Amersterdam, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly at the Staatsoper Hamburg, Graz, and with the Rome Opera at Caracalla; Chevreuse in Maria di Rohan at the Teatro La Fenice; and Valentin in Faust in Palermo.
