Baritone Tobias Greenhalgh is a versatile singer on the rise, whom Opera News recently claimed was “so clearly headed for success.” This season, Mr. Greenhalgh returns to the ensemble at Aalto-Musiktheater Essen where his roles will include Gubetta in Lucrezia Borgia, Tom Edison in Gordon Kampes’ Dogville, the Count in Le nozze di Figaro, Morales in Carmen, Papagenos in Die Zauberflöte, Valentin in Faust, and further performances of Nardo in La finta giardiniera. Last season in Essen, he sang Ottokar in Der Freischütz, Schaunard in La bohéme, the title role in Dido and Aeneas, Marco in Gianni Schicchi, Posa in Don Carlos and Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia. His other recent performances include Silvio in I Pagliacci with Boston Lyric Opera, Sibelius’ Tempest with the Oregon Symphony, the title role of Don Giovanni with both Virginia Opera and Baltimore Concert Opera, Dr. Malatesta in Don Pasquale with Opéra national de Montpellier, Dr. Falke in Die Fledermaus with Palm Beach Opera, Tom Joad in The Grapes of Wrath with Michigan Opera Theatre, Belcore in L’elisir d’amore with Opera Las Vegas, and joined the Britten Sinfonia for the world premiere of Joby Talbot’s cantata A Sheen of Dew on Flowers at the Barbicon in London.
On the concert stage, he recently made two Carnegie Hall debuts singing Smyth’s The Prison with the Cecilia Chorus of New York along with a recital at Weil Recital Hall. In addition, he has sung Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion with Soli Deo Gloria, The Druid Priest in Mendelssohn’s Die erste Walpurgisnacht and Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs with Saint George’s Choral Society, and a gala concert at Alice Tully Hall with the Opera Orchestra of New York. He was presented by the Brooklyn Art Song Society in a recital of Wolf’s Mörike Lieder with the Brooklyn Art Song Society and joined the New York Festival of Song for three concert programs, and was a Schwab Vocal Rising Star at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts. Additionally he was a vocal fellow in the 2013 Toronto Summer Music Festival.
Mr. Greenhalgh is a graduate of The Juilliard School, from which he earned both his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees. In his final year at Juilliard, he sang Malatesta in Don Pasquale and the Ferryman in Curlew River following previous performances of Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas, and The Voice of Pokaye in Davies’ Komilitonen!. He is a first place winner of the 2013 Liederkranz Competition in the opera divison. In past seasons, his other competition wins included grand prize in the Metropolitan International Music Festival Competition, first place in the Mario Lanza Competition, second place in the Oratorio Society of New York Competition, third place in the Gerda Lissner Competition, an encouragement award in the Marilyn Horne Song Competition, and career grants from The Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation, Giulio Gari Foundation, and Opera Index, Inc. Additionally, he is the co-creator of Operation Superpower, a superhero opera for kids that promotes an anti-bullying stance from early school years.
