Acclaimed as “spellbinding, seductive, and mesmerizing”(Broad Street Review) and her “comedy chops” (Splash Magazine), mezzo-soprano Lucy Baker is a 2025 scholarship recipient from the Opera Foundation and this season joins the Ensemble at Deutsche Oper Berlin where her roles will include Zweite Dame in Die Zauberflöte, Mercédès in Carmen, Amelia’s Maid in Simon Boccanegra, Bersi in Andrea Chénier, Kate Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Zweite Magd in Korngold’s Violanta, 5th Blumenmädchen in Parsifal, Hippolyta in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Zulma in L’italiana in Algeri.
Ms. Baker is a recent graduate of the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center, while in her tenure at The Lyric she performed the Peasant Girl while covering Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro, sang the role of Karolka in Jenůfa and covered the role of Tisbe in La Cenerentola, in addition to joining the company on the Lyric stage for their Rising Stars and Opera in Grant Park concerts. Also last season, she made her debut as Jano in Jenůfa with the Cleveland Symphony, joined the Internationale Mesitersinger Akadamie, and as a Fleming Artist at the Aspen Music Festival she debuted the role of Hänsel in Hänsel and Gretel. Her concert performances with Lyric have brought audible audience approval in scenes from La Grande Duchesse, Cendrillon, Dialogues des Carmélites, and La Cenerentola, where she “was a vibrant, compelling Angelina” and “her clear tone and precise intonation while rendering the line and articulations with style.” (Seen and Heard International) While pursuing her master’s degree at the Curtis Institute of Music, Lucy performed the roles of Ariodante, Dorabella in Così fan tutte, and The Hostess in a film adaptation of Marc Blitzstein’s Triple-Sec. In 2022, she joined Eric Owens with Curtis on Tour, performing a program including Brahms’ Neue Liesbeslieder Waltzes. During her time at DePaul University, Lucy sang the roles of Cherubino Le nozze di Figaro and Hansel in Hänsel and Gretel. She was a fellow at The Ravinia Steans Music Institute, attended The Chautauqua Institution, where she covered the role of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in Derrick Wang’s Scalia/Ginsburg and also performed the role of Serse.
