Richard Wiegold

Praised by the Opera News for his “cavernous bass and palpable acting,” Welsh bass Richard Wiegold returns to the Canadian Opera Company for the King in Aida, while also joining the company for their production of Der Fliegende Holländer in the 2019-20 season. He also returns to the role of Gremin in Eugene Onegin with West Green House Opera, and sings the King in Aida in concert with the Cambridge Philharmonic. Last season, he sang Theseus in A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Opéra national de Montpellier, Gualtiero in Edgar with Scottish Opera, Eroe in Semiramide in Abao-Olbe Bilbao, Sparafucile in Rigoletto with Cork Opera, Daland in Der Fliegende Holländer with Real Filharmonia de Galicia, and Titurel in Parsifal with the Saffron Opera Group. He also recently joined the Cincinnati Symphony for Arkel in Pelléas et Mélisande, Teatru Manoel Malta for Commendatore in Don Giovanni, returned to Welsh National Opera on tour for further performances of Bonze in Madame Butterfly, Pater Profundus in Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 at Ely Cathedral, and a concert of all Strauss with La Real Filharmonía de Galicia.

The Welsh bass’ other recent performances include his Lyric Opera of Chicago debut as Reinmar von Zweter in Tannhäuser, Gurnemanz in Parsifal with Estonian National Opera, Fasolt in Das Rheingold with North Carolina Opera, Bonze in Madame Butterfly, Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia and Bartolo in Le nozze di Figaro with Welsh National Opera, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte with Opéra Théâtre de Saint-Étienne, Commendatore in Don Giovanni with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, First Apprentice in Wozzeck with the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest at the Concertgebouw, Melchtal and Walther in Guillaume Tell with Welsh National Opera, Veit Pogner in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg with Saffron Opera Group, and König Marke in Tristan und Isolde with Prague State Opera and North Carolina Opera. He sang both Arkel in Pelléas et Mélisande and Commendatore in Don Giovanni for Canadian Opera Company; the First Nazarene, Second Soldier, and Fifth Jew in Salome with Gergiev conducting at the Verbier Festival; and further performances of the Fifth Jew in Salome at the Salzburg Easter Festival as well as with the Berliner Philharmoiker with Sir Simon Rattle conducting. He has sung L’homme à la Fenêtre, le Vieux, and le Mendiant Aveugle in Martinů’s Juliette at the Grand Théâtre de Genève; Reinmar von Zweter in Tannhäuser and Stefano Colonna in Rienzi with the Théâtre du Capitole Toulouse; Monterone in Rigoletto with Opéra de Limoges; Pfarrer and Dachs in Das Schlaue Füchslein at the Wiener Kammeroper; Banquo in Macbeth with Palm Beach Opera; Timur in Turandot with Utah Opera; Pater Profundus in Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 with the Norwich Philharmonic Society; Pistola in Falstaff with Lyrique-en-Mer/Festival de Belle; and Commendatore in Don Giovanni in his American debut with Opera Colorado.

Mr. Wiegold is a frequent presence at the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, where he has sung Hans Schwarz in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Doctor Grenvil in La traviata (for which the commercial DVD was a Grammy nomination), as well as the for the company’s productions of Tristan und Isolde and Manon. Elsewhere in the United Kingdom, he has joined Welsh National Opera for Vairochana in Jonathan Harvey’s Wagner Dream and Ein Priester in Moses und Aron; the Hallé Orchestra as Veit Pogner in excerpts of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg; Dorset Opera as Daland in Die fliegende Höllander; Lyric Opera Productions in Dublin for Vodnik in Rusalka; Scottish Opera for Bonze in Madama Butterfly and its production of Die Walküre; Music Theatre Wales for the Green Knight in Plowman’s Gwyneth and the Green Knight at the Royal Opera House’s Linbury Theater and with Music Theater Wales; Chelsea Opera Group for Rocco in Fidelio; King Louis VI in Euryanthe, the Polish Officer and Russian Commander in Glinka’s Life for a Tsar, and il marchese di Calatrava in La forza del destino; Longborough Festival Opera and Nevill Holt Opera for Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte; and Burry Port Opera for Ferrando in Il trovatore. He has sung the Grand Inquisitor in Don Carlos with Stowe Opera, Gremin in Eugene Onegin at Lakeland Opera, Fasolt in Das Rheingold as a guest artist at Napier University, Talbot in Giovanna d’Arco and Snug in A Midsummer Night’s Dream with English Touring Opera, the Priest and Badger in The Cunning Little Vixen at the Oundle Festival, Mustafa in L’italiana in Algeri at the Mananan International Festival. His performances of the Second Mercenary in Weinberger’s Svanda dudák at the Wexford Festival have been released on the Naxos label. He has previously joined Glyndeborne Festival Opera for its premiere of Eötvös’ Love and Other Demons as well as its production of Albert Herring. He made his professional debut as the Gardener in Un giorno di regno at the 2001 Buxton Festival.

He recently sang Jimmy in Weill’s Mahagonny Songspiel, L’Ours in Milhaud’s Les malheurs d’Orphée, and narrated Walton’s Façade with Jan Latham Koenig conducting the Orquesta Filharmónica de la UNAM in Mexico City. He made his Asian debut with the Macao Orchestra singing Schubert’s Mass No. 5 and has performed Verdi’s Requiem with the Royal Philharmonic at Royal Albert Hall; Mozart’s Requiem with Sinfornia Viva; Dvořák’s Stabat Mater, Berlioz’s L’enfance du Christ, and Bach’s Mass in B minor with the Oxford Harmonic Society; Death in Der Kaiser von Atlantis with Hallé Orchestra in staged performances for the opening of the Imperial War Museum North; Mussorgsky’s Songs and Dances of Death with the Grimethorpe Band, Schönberg‘s Serenade as a guest artist at the Royal Northern College of Music, and Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf as a guest artist at Manchester University. In the realm of contemporary music, he has premiered Mervyn Burtch’s song cycle Light and Dark at the Lower Machen Festival in addition to singing Mervyn Burtch’s Ozymandias and Panos Demopoulos’ Three Songs for Bass. His performance in Sullivan’s The Light of the World at the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral is available on the NFMS label.
